Versatile course for anyone who enjoys drawing and painting
Illustrations are stories captured in images. During class, you will learn how to tell stories visually in an investigative way. We will work through a variety of assignments, focusing on tapping into your imagination and powers of association. How do text and image work best together or how can you capture prose in images without making a one-to-one translation?
Together we will read different texts that serve as a starting point. This can be a short story from classics like Raymond Carver or Anton Chekhov, but also a theater text by Annelies Verbeke, a poem by Remco Campert, or a newspaper article. We will look at how a drawing supports text, or completely changes it. During the course you will develop your own style and become acquainted with different drawing materials. Examples showing the versatility of illustration will be discussed.
