Dodó Kis (*1991, Budapest) is a Hungarian recorder and EWI (electric wind instrument) player, composer and improviser with a soft spot for theater and electronics. She is a free-spirited player who finds her space in a variety of genres and styles, from folk-jazz to alternative funk-rock, from early music to free improvisation. Coming from Hungary, Dodó’s has been taught with the Kodaly method – a method that she incorporates into her own teaching practice.A graduate of the Conservatory of Amsterdam MA (2016), Dodó has a unique voice in the Amsterdam and European contemporary and improvised music scene; she established her interdisciplinary recorder ensemble Trio aXolot, and the genre-bending funk-rock band Jerboah. As an educator Dodó has 15 years of experience teaching all ages, from solo lessons to large ensembles, teaching classical music, contemporary music and (jazz) improvisation. In 2014 Dodó has developed her own methodology that teaches improvisational and composition techniques to children, but instead of using traditional notation it uses colors and abstract shapes that activate different parts of the brain simultaneously. Much like a performer, as an educator Dodó aims to introduce children to a vide range of music, teaching them different styles and genres, providing them with a well rounded musical basis. She has performed across Europe, the USA and Canada both as a soloist and as a member of various ensembles with outstanding players such as Ethan Iverson, Luke Stewart, Kevin Shea, Matt Mottel, Monica Akihary, Nora Mulder, Josephine Bode and Steve Shelley, a.o.Next to her mission to emancipate the recorder in the field of improvised music, Dodó is also curator of the genre-bending concert series the Nebular Sessions, and works as business director at Resonate Productions.
