In drama class 2 you will learn the basic skills of creating play scenes together. Who, what and where are paramount in this process. You learn how to shape a role. This can be from movement, from text, such as a poem, or from clothing. You learn what it is like to play in different spaces (for example, the theater becomes a dark forest or a tropical island) and you learn how to invent a story. In short: you become a real theater maker and actor in this course. And, as with all drama classes, your enjoyment and confidence are most important!

Program

What to expect.

  • Play exercises with the whole group.
  • Working in small groups on theater scenes.
  • Learning to improvise and playing immediately what you come up with.
  • Making up your own scenes, rehearsing them and showing them to the group.
  • Thinking about beginning, middle and end of a scene.
  • Learning what a role is and how to shape it with your voice, your body and sometimes clothes.
  • Looking at each other and learning from each other.
  • A presentation in the theater auditorium at the end of the year.

Target

Group 5 and 6. No experience necessary.

Lesson duration and number of lessons

  • One one-hour class each week.
  • One school year.
  • Mid-year viewing class.
  • At the end (May/June) a presentation in a real theater, with lights and sound.

Teaching Materials

You don't have to buy anything. For the final presentation you may be asked to bring for example a white T-shirt and white pants, but we usually solve this by exchange or borrowing. During the lessons we use music and sometimes theater props such as hats or utensils. Also small texts or poems, usually from the teacher, sometimes from the students.

Homework

In principle, no. Only towards the final presentation students have to memorize a limited number of phrases, so then practicing at home is helpful.

Working form during the course

Practice only: with the whole group together and, in addition, collaborative assignments in pairs or multiples.

  • There is a fantastic, fully equipped theater for the final presentation. So after the year course you will be on stage in a professional lighting plan, made by real theater technicians, with sound and all. All your friends and family members can come and watch. How fun is that!

Result

In drama class 2 you will learn and experience how much fun it is to play and create drama together. You understand the basics of how scenes are put together. You also learn how to stand on stage with confidence, how to follow stage directions and how to use your voice to speak in front of an audience. You can play roles in different ways and can use that in a performance, both solo and ensemble.

About the teacher
