During my time in Korea as a university lecturer, I discovered a deep passion for teaching-one rooted in the exchange of ideas and the powerful connections that form when minds resonate with one another. The experience was profoundly fulfilling, and it left a lasting impression on me. After moving to the Netherlands, I found new joy in sharing my cultural heritage. In an age overwhelmed by information, I realized how essential it is to offer meaningful, enriching experiences that cut through the noise. The satisfaction of seeing my students not only learn but also thrive and grow continues to energize and inspire me every day.
I chose this major after learning calligraphy at the age of 13. I liked how learning Korean painting calmed my mind and improved my concentration, and the fact that the paintings were based on literature appealed to me.
About the lessons
In my class, which starts with meditation, you can first be grateful for the mindful moment, and through repetition and practice of Zen practice, you can learn about the sense of line, capturing the essence of nature, etc. Since Korean painting is a genre of painting based on Eastern philosophy and literature, you can learn not only the skills of drawing but also the unique culture.
The most important thing in Korean painting is the basic line. We will always start with straight-line practice. You will learn that it is difficult to draw a straight line, and as you draw straight
lines well, you will see the painting develop. The important thing in this class is patience, but also boldness. I hope you will enjoy embracing imperfections and exploring new materials.
Hobbies
My hobbies are reading and watching movies. I also enjoy watching YouTube. I especially like YouTube videos about cooking because they make me relax. I have enjoyed reading since I was young, especially novels. Now I am participating in a book club and enjoying my hobbies seriously.
Inspiration
I deeply admire and love the French artist Louise Bourgeois. Her work resonates with me, beautifully weaving her personal wounds and traumas into powerful, emotional expressions. While her art speaks to femininity, it touches something universal, evoking emotions that connect with all of humanity. I believe this is because of her relentless dedication to her art-drawing and writing daily as if keeping a diary. Even in her 90s (before passed away), her words continue to inspire me: 'I am still growing.' These words have become my mantra.
